Paul Abend, D.O., FAAPM&R, has over 25 years of experience in Physiatry (a medical doctor who specializes in physical medicine, rehabilitation and pain medicine). He is double-board certified in Family Medicine and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is a fellow of the Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and of the Physiatric Association of Spine, Sports and Occupational Medicine. He is a Diplomate of the Association of Academic Physiatrists. After receiving his board certification in 1995, he has successfully completed the re-certification written boards every 10 years (2005 and 2015).
Dr. Abend is the Medical Director of Inpatient and Outpatient Services at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital – Rahway. His focus is non-surgical spinal treatments, sports injuries, post cancer survivorship, balance and neuropathy. He Co-Founded the Movement Disorder Center at RWJUH – New Brunswick.
Dr. Abend is a Clinical Associate Professor at Kessler Institute, Newark Medical School, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and Clinical Associate Professor at Rutgers Medical School Departments of Medicine and Family Medicine. He has been a Preceptor since the inception of the Kessler Institute Musculoskeletal Pain Management Fellowship Program – training Fellows in Interventional Pain Management for the last 8 years. He is a frequent lecturer to the medical and hospital staff, as well as the community at large, on various medical rehabilitation and pain management topics. He is Past President of the NJ Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Past President of the NJ Society of Medical Specialties. He is a Board Member of Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson/St.Barnabas Accountable Care Organization and Past President of Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Ambulatory Surgical Center. He is the Current President of Union County Surgical Center. He has consistently been listed as a New Jersey Top Doctor by Castle Connelly and by Consumer Reports Best Doctors. More recently, he is listed in the Leading Physicians Of The World 2016 for his work in my medicine as well as his humanitarian work in the field of autism.
Dr. Abend is a graduate of UMDNJ- New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine where he served as student body president. He was a Resident and Chief Resident, in the Department of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Hospital. He was a Resident and Chief Resident in the Department of Family Medicine at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Hospital. Additionally, he completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship in the Department of Family Medicine at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
